Making a Difference

James River Day School Students 'Reach Out' in Song

By Sandy Wallace December 19, 2014
The fifth grade choral class at James River Day School wanted to share a song with family and friends to celebrate collecting more than 8,000 cans of food during a school-wide Thanksgiving food drive. When the students couldn't find the right song, their teacher, Paddy Dougherty, helped them write their own song, "Reach Out." Last week, the students and Dougherty visited a local recording studio to record and produce the song, which may be picked up for use by one of the non-profit organizations interested in the final results. The cost of the recording was underwritten by James River Day School, just one way the school encourages creativity and supports the children in pursuing their dreams. The lyrics of "Reach Out" will touch your heart.

Reach Out
When someone's trembling and cold
I'll give them a coat to wear
When someone's lost and alone
I'll show them that I care
Kindness doesn't cost a fortune
a smile won't cost a dime
you don't have to be a millionaire
to give someone your time
Reach out to someone in need
Reach out with one good deed
Reach out one to another
Love grows from just one seed
Reach out
When someone's hungry and down
I'll gather food to share
When someone's lonely and blue
I'll be the friend who's there
Kindness really makes a difference
A smile can change a day
Let's not wait until tomorrow
when we can start today
Reach Out...
