By Sandy Wallace April 1, 2016

Springtime and baseball go hand-in-hand here in Lynchburg. As the Lynchburg Hillcats prepare for their 2017 season opener on April 6, it's time for moms and dads to plan ahead. Season tickets and books of 10 anytime tickets are on sale now.

The Hillcats will hold its annual FanFest on Saturday, April 1 from 2-6 PM. Admission is free, and the event is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a voucher for a free hot dog.

At the beginning of the event, the Hillcats will host their annual Media Home Run Derby, featuring local personalities from television, print, and radio. Following the home run derby, ALL fans can take part in batting practice on the field just like the pros.

When they're not taking their swings on the field, children can have fun in the all-new Kids' Zone at City Stadium, which features an inflatable obstacle course, a bounce house, and a brand-new speed pitch.

FanFest will also feature giveaways throughout the afternoon and free activities for fans of all ages to enjoy, such as ballpark tours. Upon entry into the stadium, fans can register on the concourse to be eligible for free prizes, which will be given out every 30 minutes. All those who register will have the chance to win caps, T-shirts and more.

Guided tours of the ballpark will allow fans to check out the team clubhouse, the skybox suites, the dugouts, and more. The Hillcats team store, The Catty Shack, will be open for business in its new location in the third-base concourse area, and fans can purchase season tickets, book tickets and single-game tickets at the event.

Lynchburg's home opener is slated for Thursday, April 6, when the Hillcats host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a rematch of the 2016 Mills Cup Championship Series at 6:30 p.m.

What's new with the Hillcats for 2017? First up is Southpaw 2.0, the new mascot for the team. Head out to Calvin Falwell Field to meet the newest member of the Hillcats family, who replaces the original (now retired) Southpaw. There's also a new playing surface and drainage system, new group seating areas, an expanded kids zone, and new colors and logos for the Hillcats.

Ticket prices have been reduced for the 2017 season. General admission tickets for bleacher seating will be $6 in 2017. All chairback seats, including those behind home plate and the dugouts, will be $9 for the upcoming season.
