Make Memories with Kids or Mom

By Sandy Wallace May 10, 2017

Don't let a rainy Mother's Day weekend spoil your fun! Whatever the weather, there are memories to be made. So set your calendar for fun this Mother's Day weekend -- whether you're spending time with your mom, kids, partner, or besties.

1. Go back in time to the 50s at Jellystone Park with the Mother's Day 50s Flashback Weekend. Don't let a little rain keep you from dancing!

2. Take family photos at the LOVEworks sculpture at Percival's Island or the LOVEworks shoe beside the Craddock Terry Hotel downtown.

3. Check out Comic Con at Lynchburg Public Library.

4. Make a date for outdoor fun. Visit the playground at Riverside Park, Miller Park, or Peaks View Park.

5. Enjoy the Mother's Day STEAM Workshop or Family Fun Night at Amazement Square on Saturday. It'll be amazing!

6. Smell the roses at Old City Cemetery. Join a guided tour over the weekend or be your own guide. Be sure to bring a camera.

7. Get active indoors this weekend. Play at Bounce About in the River Ridge Mall, Jump-n-Fun in Madison Heights or the Jump Lynchburg trampoline park, go bowling, go roller skating at FunQuest, or learn to rope climb at Rise Up Climbing.

8. Pack a picnic lunch and take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stop at the overlooks along the way for photos or to take a hike on the trails. Check out the BRP website for maps, hikes and activities.

9. Plan a rainy day board game blitz. Play some of your favorite old school games with the kids or let them teach you their favorites.

10. Go on a shop-a-thon trip to your favorite stores in Lynchburg or head to Roanoke, Richmond, or Charlottesville and shop till you drop.

11. Visit Lynchburg Museum at 901 Court Street in Downtown Lynchburg and learn more about local history. Admission is always free. Closed major holidays.

12. Treat mom to breakfast or lunch at her favorite restaurant or be creative and serve her breakfast in bed.

13. Visit your favorite Virginia State Park. Some parks offer guided hikes, while others let you hike your own hike. Check the VSP website for a listing of all 37 parks.

14. Make reservations for the Mother's Day Celebration at Kathleen O'Byrne's Irish Tea Room. Mom will thank you later.

15. Take a family trip to Colonial Williamsburg or Jamestown, Washington DC, the Children's Museum or Science Museum in Richmond, Busch Gardens or Kings Dominion, Roanoke’s Mill Mountain Zoo, or one of the many historic sites in Virginia.

16. Bake cookies, cupcakes, or other treats together or plan a special family meal and let the kids help in the kitchen.

17. Ride bikes or take a family walk at Blackwater Creek Bikeway, Percival’s Island, Riverside Park, Peaks View Park, High Bridge Trail State Park or in your own neighborhood.

18. Have a book reading marathon. See how many books you can read in a week. Read aloud as a family or let each person read silently.

19. Plan a “do nothing day” and stay in your pajamas all day. Binge watch your family’s favorite movies, enjoy snacks and just hang out together.

20. Get crafty together. Pull out your craft box and see what you can make together.
