Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent

Ash Wednesday became a topic of news recently. when William McLeod, a fourth-grade student at Valley View Elementary School in Bountiful, Utah, was told by his teacher to remove the ash cross he had received at church on the morning of Ash Wednesday. Because there are many people who don't know the religious meaning of the 40-day period before Easter, we added this section to our Easter Guide.

The liturgical season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6, 2019. If you are following the 40 days tradition (excluding Sundays), Lent ends on Holy Saturday, April 20, 2019. On Ash Wednesday, the marking of foreheads with ashes is common among Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and Episcopalians in the United States. In addition, some Methodist and Presbyterian churches adopted this custom in recent times. Many people who observe Lent devote themselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self-control through fasting.
