Plan ahead for the first weekend of October. There are tons of family friendly activities and events to enjoy in the Lynchburg area this weekend. You'll find indoor and outdoor fun guides and much more on our website

Here are our top 15 choices for family fun in the Lynchburg area this weekend. Check out our October Fall Festivals and Fun Guide, our Halloween and Trunk or Treat Guide, and our full event calendar for all of the best local events.

1. Visit an area pumpkin patch in Central Virginia. Dark Leaf Farms in Concord is open Saturdays and Sundays; Smith's Pumpkin Patch in Lynchburg is open daily; Yoders' Farm Fall Festival in Rustburg is open Tuesday through Saturday; Layman Family Farms Fall Festival in Blue Ridge is open Saturdays and Sundays; Jeter Farm Fall Festival in Roanoke is open Saturdays and Sundays, and White Fall Farm in Gretna is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (starting Oct. 5).

2. Altavista Scarecrow Stroll takes place in Altavista all month from Oct. 1 - Oct. 31. Each year Altavista On Track hosts the Altavista Scarecrow Stroll. Businesses, churches, organizations, and residents are invited to make their own scarecrows and post them up in front of their businesses or in the downtown area for visitors and residents to visit and vote on their favorite scarecrow!

3. Head to First Fridays at art galleries and Lynchburg Museum in downtown Lynchburg and be sure to check out the First Friday: Pumpkin Hacking event at Vector Space. Participants will receive one pumpkin and a variety of tools and materials to create their own custom-designed squash. This free event is fun for the entire family!

4. Support the arts in your local high schools and enjoy a performance of "Our Town" Oct. 2 - 5 at E.C. Glass High School or Pioneer Theatre Presents "The Boys Next Door" Oct. 3 - 5 at Heritage High School.

5. Fall Bazaar takes place on Saturday at Timberlake United Methodist Church. Celebrate fall with baked goods, crafts, used books, homemade soups and more!

6. Puzzled Kidz Carnival 2019 and Puzzled Car, Truck, and Bike Show on Saturday at the lower level of the Plaza in Lynchburg. These events include: live music, Touch a truck, Bounce house, vendors, Truck round up, Kids games, Petting zoo, Treat a treat, and much more.

7. Clifford Ruritan Sorghum Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday at Clifford Ruritan Community Center near Amherst. This fun event includes the Virginia State Jousting Championship, live music and performances, cake walk, raffles, and lots of foods and sorghum syrup will be available for purchase.

8. Celebrate Halloween early at University of Lynchburg CHC's Halloween 5k 2019 on Saturday at Shellenberger Field at University of Lynchburg. Dress in your favorite costume for this year’s Halloween themed 5K run/walk for a screaming good time.

9. Go for a family walk or run on Saturday and support a great cause! Do it for the Kids Day 5k Run / Walk at Peaks View Park or Out of the Darkness Community Walk at Riverfront Park. Do it for the Kids Day 5K Run / Walk is a community event open to all people, of any fitness level which helps support the mission of Patrick Henry Family Services. When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk, you help the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

10. 22nd Annual Day at the Point takes place on Saturday at Point of Honor in Lynchburg. This popular free event includes vendors, food trucks, living history demonstrations, carriage rides, a petting zoo, free kids' activities, and much more.

11. Super Hero Super Safety Day takes place on Saturday at the River Ridge Mall food court parking lot. Join River Ridge and Virginia State Police as we celebrate our every day heroes, provide safety education and demonstrations, view and learn about emergency helicopters,crime scene trucks, firetrucks, and more at this free event.

12. Apple Butter Makin' Festival takes place on Saturday at Silver Creek and Seamans' Orchards in Tyro. They will be making apple butter and pressing cider. There will be crafters, live music, food vendors, Corn Maze, PYO Pumpkins and LOTS of fresh, delicious apples to purchase.

13. Cornhole and Kubb Tournament takes place on Saturday at Peaks View Park in Lynchburg. The tournament features the American classic, corn hole, and introduce the newly trending lawn game, Kubb, also known as “Viking chess.” This tournament is open to everyone. All ages, skill levels, and experience are welcome and spectators are encouraged to cheer on the teams. Click on the link to learn more or to register a team.

14. Family Day takes place on Sunday at the Maier Museum at Randolph College in Lynchburg. Celebrate the exhibition, “Children’s Book Illustrations: Visual Storytelling” with art activities, interactive story time, kid-friendly tours, food, and more. Bring a children's book to donate and help build a Little Free Library for the Maier!

15. A pair of kids only events rounds out our list. Lynchburg Hillcats and Summit Sports Fall 2019 Baseball Camp takes place Saturday and Sunday at Lynchburg City Stadium. Healthy Kids Running Series Fall 2019 takes place at Peaks View Park on Sundays through mid-October. Click on the link to register your child for either of these fun events.
