Since July 4, 1776, America has been a free country. This is the date the Declaration of Independence was adopted by delegates from the 13 original colonies. Independence Day, also known as the 4th of July, is celebrated each year with parades, fireworks displays, the reading of the Declaration of Independence, family cookouts and other fun activities.
However you and your family observe the day, let your kids know what the 4th of July is all about. Learn more about the history of July 4th on the History Channel's website. Happy Independence Day!
