August is Back to School Month for Lynchburg City Schools and schools in the surrounding counties. Students attending W.M. Bass Elementary School in Lynchburg, who follow a year-round academic calendar, begin their school year in mid-July. School supplies and fall clothes have arrived in local stores and online registration is open for area students. Information for local public schools is noted below.

Lynchburg City Schools (except Bass Elementary School students) begin school on Wednesday, August 14. Registration for Lynchburg City Schools will be held on Thursday, August 8 from 12:30 - 7:00 PM. Pre-K, Kindergarten, and sixth grade Orientation will be held on Monday, August 12. Ninth grade orientation will be held at Heritage High School on Wednesday, August 7 from 9:00 -11:30 AM. Ninth grade orientation will be held at E.C. Glass High School on Wednesday, August 7 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Returning families should use the Parent Portal to register their students. Amherst County Schools begin school on Wednesday, August 14. Starting July 15th, Amherst County Public Schools has implemented online electronic registration for the upcoming school year. Parents/Guardians have the opportunity to complete registration forms online instead of completing them manually through the ECollect Forms service. Open House Day will be held on Thursday, August 8 from 1:00 - 7:00 PM. Check with your child's school or the Parent Portal for additional information.
Appomattox County Schools begin school on Wednesday, August 7. Open House / Fee Day will be held on Monday, August 5 from 2:00 - 6:30 PM. Check with your child's school or the Parent Portal for additional information.
Bedford County Schools begin school on Wednesday, August 14. Open House will be held on Monday, August 12 from 12 - 7 PM. Check with your child's school or the Parent Portal for additional information.
Campbell County Schools begin school on Wednesday, August 14. Pre-K, K, 6th, and 9th Grade Orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 13. Back to School Day will be held on Thursday, August 8. Check with your child's school or the Parent Portal for additional information.
Volunteer with Your Child's School
As you prepare for back to school, it's a great time to consider helping at your child's school. Working parents often think it's difficult to volunteer, since their work hours may mirror the hours school is in session. Think outside the box for ways to help at school, even if you can't be at school during the day. These five ideas will get you started. Talk to your child's teacher or the volunteer coordinator on back to school night for more suggestions.
- Ask your child's teacher about art or classroom supplies needed for the year.
- Bring food for parties and teacher appreciation lunches.
- Participate in school fundraisers. Take your child around the neighborhood or check with coworkers about items your child is selling.
- Offer to make name tags, labels or to cut art patterns at home.
- Offer to help with big projects at your child's school such as school carnivals or book fairs.
Help your child have a great year by getting involved in your child's school. Encourage your child's learning, both in and out of the classroom. Support your child's school and show your child that education is important.

Help your kids get ready for the new school year by planning ahead. Attend registration and read all of the information that's handed out. These five additional tips will help make the school year easier for the entire family:
- Spend the last week before school begins with earlier bedtimes and earlier wake-up times so your child will be ready on the first day of school.
- Encourage your child to read at least 15 minutes each day. Even better, spend time reading together as a family.
- Help your child set goals for the new school year and set up a study center stocked with all of the supplies your child will need.
- Limit electronics during the week and encourage your child to study even when there's no homework.
- Stay in touch with your child's teacher and attend events held at school. Volunteer in your child's classroom if possible.
