Help Kids Stay Organized This School Year

Before the new school year begins, plan ahead to help your child stay organized.

Before the new school year begins, plan ahead to help your child stay organized. So many things pull your children in all directions during the school year. Friends, homework, phone calls and texting, school activities, sports, church events and family time may make your child feel very stressed.

These tips will help your child get and stay organized.

  • Help your child stay focused with a family calendar to keep up with events that the entire family will attend.
  • Provide your child with an individual planner to keep up with his own events, projects and deadlines.
  • Talk to your child about working on what needs to be done first and saving the extras for spare time only.
  • Work with your child to carve out chunks of down time. This will help your child have something to look forward to.
  • Let your child's internal clock determine the best times for the more difficult homework.
  • Encourage your child to ask questions in class and to bring home any books and supplies he'll need.
  • Keep the homework area stocked with pens, pencils, paper, markers or colored pencils, paper, reference books and anything else your child will need.

With a little help and encouragement, your child can learn to stay focused and organized. The skills your child learns now will stay with him for life.
