Veterans Day: A Salute to America's Heroes

Virginia parades, observances, and ceremonies honor local veterans

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies that ended the Great War, now known as World War I. Veterans Day, first observed as Armistice Day to honor veterans of World War I, now honors all who served in the United States Armed Forces. 


Veterans Day events taking place in our area and across Virginia include:

The 70th annual National Veterans Day Observance will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 AM. The program in Memorial Amphitheater is open to the public. 

The Commonwealth of Virginia’s 2023 Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Virginia War Memorial in Richmond on Friday, Nov. 10 at 11 AM. 

There will be a Veterans Day Observance at D-Day Memorial in Bedford on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 AM.

There will be a Veterans Day Observance at Monument Terrace in Lynchburg on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 AM. In addition, the weekly Monument Terrace Troop Rally will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 at 12 PM.

There will be a Veterans Day Ceremony at Appomattox American Legion in Appomattox on Nov. 11 at 11 AM.

Virginia's Veterans Parade will be held in downtown Roanoke on Saturday, Nov. 11, starting at 11 AM. Come early and thank a veteran in person in the Market Building, starting at 9:30 AM.

There will be a Veterans Day Commemoration at National Center for Healthy Veterans at Valor Farm in Altavista on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 4 PM.

There will be a Veterans Day Service at American Legion Post 16 in Lynchburg on Nov. 12 at 3 PM.


In addition to these events, The National Park Service is waiving entrance fees at all national Parks on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023.
