Virginia State Parks: Summer Fun Close to Home

By Sandy Wallace May 13, 2019

Virginia's State Parks are one of the treasures of our state that are often overlooked. The second Saturday in June is National Get Outdoors Day and there's no better place to enjoy the great outdoors than a Virginia State park.

There are several state parks within an hour's drive from Lynchburg: Smith Mountain Lake State Park, James River State Park, Holliday Lake State Park, and High Bridge Trail State Park. Many of the parks have Facebook pages and all have information on the Department of Conservation and Recreation's website

Check out our Summer Day Tripping articles about some of the Virginia State Parks at the links below:

Virginia State Parks offer many free and inexpensive activities. Why not plan a trip to your closest Virginia State Park this summer? You can camp out, rent kayaks or canoes, go fishing, hike the trails, and enjoy other fun activities. Some of the state parks also have swimming areas with beaches. For a great family staycation for a fraction of the cost of a beach trip, you can stay here in Virginia and enjoy a great day.
