You don't have to stay indoors just because it's winter. All winter, Lynchburg Macaroni Kid wants to help you spend more time outdoors by suggesting great local places to enjoy. This week's pick is Riverside Park. From playground fun to hiking and tennis, there are many ways to have fun at Riverside Park.

The Play Core playground area is a favorite with kids of all ages. Kids can climb on the train structure, slide down the fireman's pole or the slides, play music underneath the train, hang from the monkey bars and make new friends. Visit the sensory area beside the train structure and check out the different sounds you can make. The plastic igloo-shaped structure is perfect for climbing on or playing inside.

Head to the older playground and check out the swings and slide too!

Take a hike on the Alpine Trail on a sunny winter day. Be sure to bring along hiking sticks to keep your balance.

The Alpine Trail has recently been updated. You can also walk or bike the paved trail around the park, starting at the Play Core playground. Check out the newly renovated Overlook and sit on bench to watch for trains at the end of the paved trail, then walk the lower path past the restored train before returning to the parking lot.

Try to spend 15 to 30 minutes each day participating in active, outdoor time. You can hike, ride bikes or just play a game of ball in your own back yard. Bundle up first if it's really cold. Spending time outdoors helps the kids burn off some of that sitting-all-day energy. Start this week and commit to spending time outdoors every week during winter -- every day if you can. Get physical and have a happy, healthy 2024.
