You don't have to stay indoors just because it's winter. All winter, Lynchburg Macaroni Kid wants to help you spend more time outdoors by suggesting great local places to enjoy. This week's pick is the Blackwater Creek Bikeway, a great place for riding bikes or enjoying a family nature walk.
The paved trails are perfect for riding bikes, rollerblading or skateboarding. You'll always find plenty of company on the Bikeway from area runners and cyclists. Be sure to follow proper trail etiquette and stay to the right side of the trail, calling out "Passing on the left" before passing slower walkers or cyclists.
The first mile of the Trail from the Ed Page Entrance (off Langhorne Road) is the busiest section of the paved Bikeway. Pick up a "Trails of Lynchburg" guide at the kiosk at the trailhead to check out the entire Lynchburg trail system.
A new section of the Blackwater Creek Bikeway opened in 2020, connecting the Bikeway to the parking lot at Linkhorne Elementary School. Parking at the school is limited and not permitted during weekday morning and afternoon bus hours, so plan ahead. This section of the trail is in the sun most of the day, unlike most of the Blackwater Creek Bikeway, so it's a great option on colder winter days.
Try to spend 15 to 30 minutes each day participating in active, outdoor time. You can hike, ride bikes or just play a game of ball in your own back yard. Bundle up first if it's really cold. Spending time outdoors helps the kids burn off some of that sitting-all-day energy. Start this week and commit to spending time outdoors every week during winter -- every day if you can. Get physical and have a happy, healthy 2024.
