All winter, Lynchburg Macaroni Kid wants to help you spend more time outdoors by suggesting great local places and active pastimes to enjoy. After all, life is NOT a spectator sport!
Take a road trip this week to Bedford's Falling Creek Park. Hike, ride bikes, play on the playground, check out the Life Trail Fitness Stations, play disc golf, enjoy a picnic lunch or learn new tricks at the progressive bike park or the skate park. Falling Creek Park is located near the Bedford County Parks and Recreation offices at 1257 County Farm Road, a short distance off Route 460 in Bedford.
There's more than a dozen hiking trails ranging from one-quarter mile to two miles in length. Older kids will enjoy the challenges of the sand pit, log rides, cork screw, dirt jumps and skinny riding in the Mountain Bike Park. Whether your mountain biker is a beginner or an expert, there's plenty of challenges. The 17,500 square foot skate park is open to all ages and abilities. Helmets are mandatory while knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are strongly recommended. Pack a picnic lunch, bring the kites, bikes and skateboards and spend the day at Bedford's Falling Creek Park.
Try to spend 15 to 30 minutes each day participating in active, outdoor time. You can hike, ride bikes or just play a game of ball in your own back yard. Bundle up first if it's really cold. Spending time outdoors helps the kids burn off some of that sitting-all-day energy. Start this week and commit to spending time outdoors every week during winter -- every day if you can. Get physical and have a happy, healthy 2024.
