You don't have to stay indoors just because it's winter. All winter, Lynchburg Macaroni Kid wants to help you spend more time outdoors by suggesting great local places to enjoy. This week's pick is Percival's Island.
Percival's Island is close to home and a great place for a family hike. The parking lot for Percival's Island Natural Area is located at 1600 Concord Turnpike in Downtown Lynchburg. In addition to the paved walking and cycling trail, there are trails in the woods and you can walk down to the river. After you cross the bridge onto the island, head down the steps on your left and you'll be beside the James River.
Walk through the woods and you can walk down below the bridge, following a foot trail through the woods. You can walk all the way down to the river's edge. Follow the trail to the tip of Percival's Island. The kids will have a blast exploring the island.
Walk back up to the paved trail and check out the marked hiking trail into the woods on the right. There are multiple side trails you can follow to see the river close-up. Pack a lunch to eat at the picnic table, but be sure to bring your trash back out with you. There's even a swing tied to a tree branch overlooking the river, but you have to hunt a little to find it.
Try to spend 15 to 30 minutes each day participating in active, outdoor time. You can hike, ride bikes or just play a game of ball in your own back yard. Bundle up first if it's really cold. Spending time outdoors helps the kids burn off some of that sitting-all-day energy. Start this week and commit to spending time outdoors every week all year -- every day if you can. Get physical and have a happy, healthy 2024.
