Christmas Cookie Recipes

Cookies for kids of all ages to make and eat!

Making cookies together is a fun way to celebrate the holidays. Whether you prefer roll and bake sugar cookies, slice and bake chocolate chip cookies or a favorite family recipe, you can't go wrong when spending time with your kids. 

Baking cookies is a fun after school activity for kids of all ages. Round out homemade cookie plates by adding some refrigerator dough or box mix cookies to save time!

Here are a few of our family's traditional cookie recipes to enjoy with your family. 

Galaxy Cookies


Ingredients
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla
Food color, if desired
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
Dates, nuts, semisweet chocolate pieces, and candied or maraschino cherries
Icing (right)

Directions
Heat oven to 350. Mix thoroughly butter, sugar, vanilla and few drops food color. Work in flour and salt until dough holds together. (If dough is dry, mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons light cream.)
Mold dough by tablespoonfuls around date, nut, cherry, or a few chocolate pieces. Place cookies about 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until set but not brown.
Cool; dip tops of cookies into Icing. If desired, decorate with coconut, nuts, colored sugar, candies, chocolate pieces, or chocolate shot. Makes 20 to 25 cookies.

Icing
Mix 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 2 1/2 tablespoons light cream or 1 1/2 tablespoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth. If desired, stir in few drops food color.  
For a chocolate icing, increase light cream to 3 tablespoons or milk to 2 tablespoons and stir in 1 ounce melted cooled unsweetened chocolate.

Snickerdoodles

Ingredients
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
(instead of 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar, you can use 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon baking powder)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped nuts (I don’t use nuts)

Directions
In mixing bowl cream butter or margarine and sugar till light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Blend in milk and vanilla. Thoroughly stir together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt; stir into creamed mixture. Blend in chopped nuts. Form dough into 1-inch balls. Place balls 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Lightly flatten balls with sugared bottom of tumbler. Bake cookies at 375 till done, 10-12 minutes. Makes about 8 dozen.

Chocolate Crinkles

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup cooking oil
3 1-ounce squares unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 eggs
1/4 cup milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Sifted powdered sugar

Directions
Combine first 4 ingredients. Beat in eggs, one at a time; beat well after each. Stir in milk. Stir flour and baking powder together. Stir into egg mixture. Chill. Using 1 tablespoon dough for each, shape into balls; roll in powdered sugar.  Place on greased cookie sheet  Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes. While warm, roll again in powdered sugar. Makes 4 dozen.

Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
Dash of salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
Peppermint Glaze (optional)

Directions
In a large mixing bowl beat butter or margarine till softened. Add powdered sugar and beat till fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, peppermint extract, and salt.  Beat well. Add flour and beat till well mixed. Divide dough in half. Stir food coloring into one half. Cover each half and chill about 30 minutes or till easy to handle.
For each cookie, on a lightly floured surface shape a teaspoonful of plain dough into a 4-inch rope. Repeat with a teaspoonful of red dough. Place ropes side by side and twist together. Pinch ends to seal. Form twisted ropes into a cane. Place canes 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in a 375 over for 8-10 minutes or till done. Remove and cook. If desired, brush with Peppermint Glaze. Makes 48.

Peppermint Glaze
Stir together 1 cup sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract and enough water (4-5 teaspoons) to make of brushing consistency.


Jello Cookies 

Ingredients
4 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups butter
1 cup sugar
1 3 ounce package Jello Gelatin, any flavor
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions
Sift flour with baking powder. Cream butter. Gradually add sugar and gelatin, creaming well after each addition. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Gradually add flour mixture, mixing after each addition. Force dough through cookie press onto ungreased cookie sheets (or just form dough into 1-inch balls). Sprinkle with gelatin, decorate with sprinkles, or leave plain. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes until golden brown at edges. Makes 5 dozen.
