When my son was in preschool, his class made cinnamon spice heart ornaments for Christmas. After searching on the web, I found this recipe at SimplyNotable.com that's perfect for making with the kids for Valentine's Day. Tie a cinnamon spice heart onto a plate of homemade goodies to share.
Cinnamon Spice Valentine's Heart Ornaments
1 cup cinnamon
2 tablespoons ground cloves
2 tablespoons ground nutmeg
1 cup applesauce or apple butter
2 tablespoons white glue
1. Mix the ingredients together to form a ball. I used apple butter in place of the applesauce to make the ornaments a darker color.
2. Knead the dough and form into a ball. Roll out the dough between sheets of wax paper, sprinkled with cinnamon. Use different sized heart cookie cutters to cut the dough into shapes.
3. Use a drinking straw to cut a hole for hanging at the top of each heart.
4. Place hearts onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 200 degrees for two hours, turning after an hour. Let cool for an hour.
5. Paint one side of each heart with Mod Podge to seal. While wet, sprinkle with glitter.
6. After dried, add red yarn to hang your hearts.
You can make these cinnamon spice hearts in your child's classroom, with your kids or grandkids or with friends at a Valentine's Day party.
Try different colors of glitter. Some favorites with kids are red, silver and gold, but be creative. Hang your cinnamon spice hearts from a seasonal tree or write names on them with paint and tie onto Valentine's Day gifts as unique gift tags.
