Virginia was home to eight United States presidents

Any time is the right time to explore the historic side of Virginia. Now's the time to start planning family adventures. Take a road trip through history on a presidential road trip and discover Virginia, home to eight United States presidents. 

Presidents Day is celebrated across the country on the third Monday in February, but any time is a great time to learn more about Virginia's presidents. Some of these historic sites are open weekends only, so check before you go.

It's only about an hour to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, located just outside Charlottesville. Open daily all year long, Monticello offers a variety of guided tours. You can also purchase the day pass and explore on your own. You can also visit Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, the summer home of Jefferson, conveniently located in Forest. Poplar Forest is open daily from mid-March through December and on weekends during most of the winter.

While you're in Charlottesville, plan to visit James Monroe's Highland. Highland is open daily with guided tours offered on Friday and Saturday mornings.

George Washington, the Father of our Country called Virginia home. Washington was born on his father's tobacco farm in Colonial Beach and moved to Mount Vernon as a young child. George Washington's Mount Vernon, located near Washington, D.C., is open daily.

James Madison's Montpelier is located in Orange County, just north of Charlottesville and is open weekends only. At Montpelier, you'll find the Presidential home, a memorial to the Enslaved Community, and museum of American history.

Visit the Virginia Tourism Corporation's website for information about these historic homes as well as: the Berkeley Plantation, birthplace of William Henry Harrison; Sherwood Forest, home of John Tyler; the Woodrow Wilson Library in Staunton; and Zachary Taylor's birthplace in Barboursville.
