There's a fun park for family playtime in Central Virginia and it's close to home! Riveredge Park is located at 150 Rocky Hill Road in Madison Heights, just across the James River from Lynchburg.
The easiest way to get to the park from Lynchburg is to follow Main Street to 5th Street, then cross the bridge over the James River. Turn right onto River Road when you see the Amherst County sign on the right. At the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Rocky Hill Road and follow the signs to Riveredge Park.
If you're coming from Madison Heights, take the Business 29 exit just past Lowe's, turn right at the stop sign, then turn left onto River Road as you're coming down the hill toward Lynchburg. At the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Rocky Hill Road and follow the signs to Riveredge Park.
The park has been open to the public for a while and a the playground was added several years ago. The plastic play structure includes slides, monkey bars, climbing walls and structures, and there's a free-standing see-saw too.
In addition to the playground, there's a short paved trail for walking and biking, signage about the history of the James River batteau, a public boat ramp, benches for watching the river, and James River Adventures Canoe and Kayak Rental.
From various points in the park, you can see Downtown Lynchburg. Although the views are better in the winter when the trees don't have leaves, there are a few places with unobstructed views in the summer. The Lynchburg skyline and James River views are especially pretty at sunset and dusk.
Dogs on leashes are welcome at the park and there are dog bag stations for cleaning up after your pet. So bring the kids, your bikes or scooters, and the dog and check out Riveredge Park in Madison Heights. It's a great place for family fun, playing, taking family photos, walking, and river watching.
