Holiday Side Dishes That Will Steal the Spotlight

These family favorite side dishes will be the stars of the show at your house!

Special holiday meals call for special side dishes. Whether you're celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or a special family holiday, these family favorite side dishes will be the stars of the show at your house.

Easy Veggie Casserole

1 26 ounce can cream of mushroom soup
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
2/3 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 16 ounce packages frozen California style vegetables, cooked and drained
2 2 1/2 ounce cans French fried onions

Mix together soup, 1 cup of cheese, sour cream, and pepper. Stir in vegetables and half of the onion.  Spoon into 3 quart baking dish and bake at 400 for 20 minutes until hot. Stir and sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of cheese and remaining French fried onions on top. Return to oven for 2 minutes until onions are brown.

You can also make this recipe in the slow cooker, cooking on low for 4-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours.

Sweet Potato Casserole

1 large can sweet potatoes
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1-2 cups miniature marshmallows 

Drain can of sweet potatoes and reserve the liquid. Pour drained sweet potatoes into a 1 1/2 quart baking dish. Mix together 1 cup of reserved liquid, the butter, and brown sugar in a pan. Heat mixture to boiling over medium heat while stirring constantly. Pour liquid over sweet potatoes and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Remove baking dish from oven and sprinkle miniature marshmallows on top. Return to oven for 5 minutes until marshmallows begin to brown.

If you prefer mashed sweet potatoes, mash the sweet potatoes mixed with 1/2 cup of reserved liquid, 1 tablespoon melted butter, and 1 tablespoon brown sugar. Pour mix into casserole and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Remove baking dish from oven and sprinkle miniature marshmallows on top. Return to oven for 5 minutes until marshmallows begin to brown.

Pumpkin Bread

3 1/3 cups flour
2 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup water
2 cups canned pumpkin
4 eggs
2/3 cup nuts, optional
1/3 cup raisins, optional

Mix first eight ingredients together in large bowl. Add oil, water, eggs, and pumpkin. Mix well. 

Pour mixture into two greased and floured loaf pans or six mini loaf pans. Bake at 325 for 1 1/4 hours for loaf pans or 45 minutes for mini loaf pans. Let cool completely before slicing.
