Planning a 4th of July celebration? Whatever's on the menu, you'll be the star of the day with this 4th of July American Flag Cake!
It's easier than it looks. Start with your favorite cake recipe -- we usually use a Funfetti box mix.
1. Bake in a 13x9 pan, following recipe directions and cool. You can leave in the pan as we do or place on a serving platter before decorating.
2. Separate a tub of white frosting into three parts.
3. Add blue food coloring to one part, red food coloring to one part, and keep one part white.
4. Use toothpicks to lay out the design area for the blue field and the stripes. The blue field in the upper left corner of the cake should be approximately 5 inches high and 6 inches wide.
5. Outline a total of 13 stripes: seven beside the blue field and six below.
6. Use a frosting bag or knife to spread the white stripes, removing toothpicks as you complete stripes. (Top and bottom stripes will be red.)
7. Use a frosting bag or knife to spread the red stripes.
8. Use a frosting bag or knife spread blue frosting in the upper left hand corner of the cake.
9. Reapply frosting as needed to cover any bleedover.
10. After blue frosting is set, use a toothpick to apply 50 stars in the blue field.
Tip: We use a small sized American flag as a model when decorating our cake.
Serve with pride on July 4th and enjoy!
