Get Ready for Fall Running in Lynchburg

Let Lynchburg Macaroni Kid help you Find Your Family Fun® in 2023!

Fall weather is just ahead in Lynchburg -- the perfect time to enjoy running with your kids. Running is a great way to have fun with the family while focusing on fitness. Lynchburg is a runner-friendly city, with many races and fun runs suitable for families and kids.

You'll find numerous running events on the Lynchburg Macaroni Kid calendar of events. Encourage your child to run for fun -- better still, join your child for family running fun. Some of the local upcoming family-friendly running events include: 

Face the Forest 5k Obstacle Course Race at Poplar Forest takes place on Aug. 19 at 7:30 AM at Poplar Forest. All ages are welcome.

Amazing Mile Youth Run and Family Festival takes place on Sept. 29 starting at 6 PM (festival at 4 PM) at Amazement Square. This event is open to all children up to age 13.

Virginia 10 Miler, Virginia 4 Miler, and Virginia 4 Mile Walk take place on Sept. 30 at 8 AM at E.C. Glass High School. All three events are open to all ages.

Color Run at Liberty Lake Park in Bedford takes place on Oct. 7 at 10 AM at Liberty Lake Park.

31st Annual Dr. John A. Stephenson Memorial Youth Run takes place on Oct. 14 at 9 AM at Riverside Park. Ages 0-13 are welcome.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fall 5k takes place on Oct. 21 at 9 AM at Sweet Briar College. All ages are welcome.

Healthy Kids Running Series Fall 2023 begins on Oct. 22 at Linkhorne Middle School. Runs take place on Sunday afternoons at 3 PM and continue weekly through Nov. 19. This event is for kids from Pre-K to 8th grade.

I Am Woman 5K Walk and Run takes place on Oct. 28 at 8 AM at the Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center. This event is for women and girls of all ages.

Walk to End Alzheimer's takes place on Oct. 28. Registration begins at 9 AM on the day of the event. The opening ceremony is at 10 AM in the Wyndhurst community in Lynchburg, followed by the walk. All ages are welcome.

Lynchburg CASA Superhero Run takes place on Nov. 4 at Percival's Island Natural Area and Trail. The 5K run, open to all ages, begins at 10 AM. The children's fun runs follow and are for children 12 and under. 

Girls on the Run 5K takes place on Nov. 18 at 9:30 AM at Sweet Briar College

Lynchburg Turkey Trot for Humankind 5k Run and Walk takes place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23 at 8 AM at E.C. Glass High School. This event is open to all ages.

Altavista Giblet Jog 5K takes place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23 at 8:30 AM at English Park in Altavista.

Many families enjoy staying active together. There are lots of ways to promote a healthy lifestyle with your kids and running is one of the easiest. Your child doesn't need to be a world-class athlete to enjoy running and you don't either. You'll find plenty of runners every day on the paved Blackwater Creek Trail and other local trails. So lace up your shoes and give running a try this fall.

Fall festival season in Central Virginia is in full swing now. Some local fall festivals are primarily for adults, but many also offer fun kids' activities. Check out the information booths, let the kids enjoy the rides, pick up some yummy festival food and make memories as you spend a day outdoors together.
