Whether you want to get away overnight or just for a day trip close to Lynchburg, here are five ways to enjoy a family staycation within a short drive of Lynchburg, VA.
1. Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, 4000 Candlers Mountain Road in Lynchburg.
It's winter all year long at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre. Whether your kids are little or big, Snowflex offers lots of fun options. Come out on $10 Tuesday to receive the 2-hour Combo Pass for only $10! The Combo Pass includes rentals, skiing, snowboarding, trampolining, tubing, and sledding. 2. JUMP Lynchburg Trampoline Park, 3700 Candlers Mountain Road in Lynchburg.
Let your kids get out some energy by jumping at JUMP Lynchburg Trampoline Park. Jump around on over 10,000 square feet of connected, world-class trampolines, including the trampoline field, angled wall trampolines, a pit of multicolored foam blocks, a jousting pit, plus 3 basketball goals and dodgeball court. Got littles? Check out Jumping Beans on Friday mornings. Your teens will love Jump 'N Glow on Friday and Saturday evenings. Special Needs Jump is available Monday through Thursday all evening too. 3. Bedford, VA.
The small town of Bedford is located 30 minutes from Lynchburg. There are many options available, both outside and indoors. The National D-Day Memorial takes you on a walk back in time to the early days of US involvement in World War II. At Bedford's Falling Creek Park, you'll find walking, hiking and mountain biking trails, playground equipment, outdoor courts, picnic areas, a fitness trail and a large Skate Park for the kids to practice their skateboarding tricks. Liberty Lake Park offers a fishing lake (license required), playgrounds, picnic areas, picnic shelters, walking trails, skateboard area, tennis court, volleyball area, and baseball fields. There are also several small neighborhood parks in Bedford. Find information about all of Bedford's parks here. Other great Bedford destinations include: Peaks of Otter Lodge, Johnson's Orchards, A.J. Gross and Sons Orchard, Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library, and the Bedford Visitor's Center. Bedford is also home to lots of interesting shops in Centertown Bedford and has the closest Sonic location to Lynchburg.
4. Mill Mountain Zoo, Mill Mountain Spur in Roanoke.
Mill Mountain Zoo is located in Downtown Roanoke, atop Mill Mountain. This small zoo is perfect for younger kids who can't tolerate hours of walking through larger zoos such as the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, DC. Kids ages 2 and under are admitted free. Some fun activities at the zoo include Spring Break Camp on April 6-8, Spring Fling on March 20, and Night Howls on the third Thursday evening each month. 5. Virginia Safari Park, 229 Safari Lane in Natural Bridge.
Virginia Safari Park is located about an hour from Lynchburg and is Virginia's only drive-thru safari adventure. Virginia Safari Park opens for the 2021 season on March 6 and is open daily through late November. Kids of all ages will love feeding the animals from the safety of your own vehicle on the 3-mile drive through the park. You can also walk through Safari Village. Covid-19 restrictions apply.
