Whether or not your family took Sunday drives back in the day, now is the perfect time to introduce leisurely drives to your family. Unlike most places we go, Sunday drives don't have a specific destination, but are a way to just enjoy the scenery on your journey.
Here in Central Virginia, we are blessed to have the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America's favorite scenic drives in our backyard. It's always our top choice for Sunday drives. Here are our favorite Sunday drives in Central Virginia. Pick one to enjoy with your family soon!
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic drive, starting near Waynesboro, Va. and connecting Shenandoah National Park to the north with Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the south. Read more about the Parkway here: Visit the Blue Ridge Parkway with Your Family
Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park is 105 miles long. The south entrance to Shenandoah National Park is located near Waynesboro and the north entrance is located near Front Royal. There are two additional entrances as well. There is a $30 entrance fee, which covers unlimited entry for one non-commercial vehicle with up to 15 passengers for seven consecutive days, beginning on the day of purchase, or you can purchase an annual pass. We often hike in Shenandoah National Park, but it's also beautiful to drive the length of Skyline Drive or one section. Here's our favorite hikes: 10 Awesome Hikes in Shenandoah National Park
When you're driving country roads, you need to pack along your patience. You'll be driving primarily on two lane roads. There may be farm tractors and other slow moving vehicles, motorcyclists and bicyclists, vintage cars, and even horse and buggies in some areas. Enjoy one of these beautiful drives on a day you don't have anywhere you need to be.
Let your kids play road Bingo with homemade Bingo cards or you can buy them at Given's Books and Little Dickens. Bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy too!
