Description

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (1695 Perrowville Road, Forest) is launching its series of bicentennial year events with a tour of the church's historic cemetery on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. The tour will focus on a number of the noteworthy families and individuals who worshipped at St. Stephen's during the past 200 years and who made significant professional and community contributions to Bedford County, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the nation. It is being led by members of the church's congregation and divided into three areas: the Radford family plot; the historic section of the 19th- and early-20th centuries; and the post-1950 modern section. The historic sanctuary will also be open to visitors.

This tour is the first in a year-long series of special events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the founding of St. Stephen's in 1824 by The Rt. Rev. Nicholas Hamner Cobbs, the church's first rector. Other events in the coming months include a celebratory bicentennial service, opening of a historic time capsule, and sealing of a new 100-year time capsule on May 26, a concert by the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra String Quartet on June 30, and a special visit from The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, former presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States, on October 11-13. Additional cemetery tours and special performances are also being scheduled.

The cemetery tour is free and no advance registration is required. For more information please contact the St. Stephen's Parish Office by email at ststephensforest@mail.com or by phone at (434) 525-5511.
