Description

St. John’s Concerts will present a choral and organ concert, “Glimpses of Paradise” on Sunday, March 2nd at 4:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 205 Elmwood Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503. Maurice Duruflé’s “Requiem” in the version for choir, baritone soloist, and organ will be the featured work in the program. Other works in the concert include Jonathan Dove’s “Ecce Beatam Lucem” (“Behold the holy light”) and James Whitbourn’s “Alleluia Jubilate” (“Alleluia, rejoice”). The choirs include St. John’s Parish Choir, Cantate Children’s and Youth Choir, and Randolph College Chorale. Randall Speer will conduct, and Peggy Haas Howell will play the organ. Called a “play-anything virtuoso” by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ms. Howell is a consummate organist who has given recitals throughout America and Europe. She has recorded for the BBC, Sender Freies Berlin, the Finnish Broadcasting Company, and Raven Recordings. In addition to serving as Organist and Choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church and Director of Cantate Children’s and Youth Choir, she is also the National Vice President and Councillor for Competitions and New Music for the American Guild of Organists. Ms. Howell received a BA in Church Music from Susquehanna University and a Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary. The concert is in memory of two members of St. John’s Choir, Barbara Betenbaugh and Reginald Puckett.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated and an offering will be collected. For more information, please visit cantatechoir.org or stjohnslynchburg.org
