10 Ways to Find Holiday Magic in the Lynchburg Area Dec. 18-20, 2020

It's hard to believe it's already the last weekend before Christmas! Little ones everywhere are excited and can't wait for the big day.

As the countdown to Christmas continues, here's 10 ways to find some holiday magic this weekend at home, around town, or nearby.

1. Go see Christmas lights! Our family's top five displays are: O Christmas House at 76 Delaney Drive in Lynchburg, 19706 Leesville Road in Lynchburg, 79 Deerfield Lane in Lynchburg, and 4200 Fort Avenue (the penguin house) in Lynchburg, and the Rustburg Christmas Light Show, behind Rustburg Elementary School in Rustburg. 2. Head to the Bridge - Natural Bridge State Park. Check out the Festival of Trees at Natural Bridge State Park in Natural Bridge daily through Jan. 1 from 9 AM - 5 PM. After dark, take a walk through Luminary Nights at Natural Bridge State Park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 18-20 from 5 PM - 8 PM.

3. Celebrate the holidays in Bedford, known as the Christmas Capital of the World. Start with the Festival of Trees at Bedford Welcome Center, Bedford daily from 9 AM - 5 PM. Next stop is the Trains Exhibit at Bedford Museum in Bedford open Monday - Saturday from 10 AM - 5 PM (until 8 PM on Dec. 18). After dark, check out the Christmas Light Display at Liberty Lake in Bedford daily through Jan. 1 from 5 PM - 10 PM and the Christmas Lights Display at English Meadows Elks Campus in Bedford daily through Dec. 31 from 5:30 PM - 10 PM.

4. Visit Appomattox for the holidays! Enjoy Christmas lights, a living Nativity, cookies and cocoa at Lights of Evergreen and Living Nativity at Evergreen Baptist Church in Appomattox on Dec. 19 and 20 from 6 PM - 8 PM. Liberty Christmas Lights Show at Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox takes place daily from 5 PM - 10 PM through Dec. 25 and includes thousands of synchronized lights outdoors, along with two 30 foot Christmas trees, a nativity scene, and candles in every window. 

5. Listen to the sounds of the holidays from the comfort of your own home. Happy Holidays with the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra at Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg is online on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 PM.

6. Visit Santa. You'll find Santa at River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg Monday - Saturday from 11 AM - 8 PM; Sundays from 12-6 PM through Dec. 24. You'll also find Santa at Children's Christmas Drive Thru at Monroe First Baptist Church in Monroe on Sunday, Dec. 20 from 5 PM - 7 PM. While you're there, enjoy the Christmas decorations and pick up snacks, crafts and other fun goodies to take home.

7. Do some last minute Christmas shopping. The Lynchburg Community Market Mistletoe Market is Saturday, Dec. 19 from 7 AM - 2 PM with craft vendors upstairs in the Armory. The Christmas Market at Bedford Farmers Market is Saturday, Dec. 19 from 9 AM - 12 PM. Check out these places to Shop Local in Lynchburg and Central Virginia for the holidays.

9. Host an ugly mask contest this holiday season. Gather up craft supplies and let your family compete to see who can create the best ugly mask. Want to include friends or family? Drop off an ugly mask DIY kit and create together from home via Zoom or Facetime!

10. Make salt dough ornaments. Let the kids shape salt dough into keepsake ornaments for gifts or hang to on your Christmas tree. Mix flour, salt, and water; roll and cut out shapes; bake and dry; then paint and seal to finish these cute treasures.
