20 Inexpensive Lynchburg Family Activities to Enjoy Before Summer Ends

Summer is a time for making family memories -- Squeeze out some family fun before it ends!

Can you believe that school starts in only about a month? Before you get tied up in the school day routine, try to enjoy the last days of summer. It's easy to make a little time every day for family fun. There are many Lynchburg area activities that are free or very inexpensive. Pick a few and enjoy making family memories before you say farewell to summer 2024!

1. Play disc golf at Peaks View Park -- use regular frisbees if you don't own disc golf discs.

2. Plan a family play date at an area school playground. Our two favorites are Heritage Elementary School and Linkhorne Elementary School.

3. Enjoy fresh fruit from a Central Virginia pre-picked or PYO fruit orchard.

4. Head to one of our favorite water holes for summertime water fun.

5. Ride bikes at Percival's Island, Peaks View Park, or the Blackwater Creek Bikeway. Check out our top 10 places to ride bikes in the Lynchburg area.

6. Go out for ice cream or shaved ice at one of these local sweet treat locations.

7. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day at one of these top 10 picnic sites.

8. Take a family hike in a local park or one of these hiking trails off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

9. Visit Riveredge Park in Madison Heights. You can walk down the boat ramp to see the James River, walk or ride bikes on the paved trail, or enjoy the playground.

10. Have a family fun day at Smith Mountain Lake State Park or Holliday Lake State Park

11. Visit Monument Terrace in Downtown Lynchburg -- walking up and down the steps is great exercise!

12. Head to Percival's Island to take photos at the LOVEworks sculpture, then hike down under the bridge to the James River.

14. Run and play in the water for FREE at the Riverside Park Sprayground in Lynchburg or the Altavista Splash Park at English Park.
