If your family is like ours, community fireworks displays, local Independence Day celebrations, and other fun events are usually part of your 4th of July!
So, just a few things to add about this year's Independence Day celebration.
1, It's a BIG one! This is America's 250th anniversary! So celebrate BIG, whether at home or elsewhere.
2. Expect BIG crowds at most of these events, so bring your patience. If big crowds aren't your thing, choose the smaller venue events instead.
3. The weather isn't cooperating this year. The weekend of June 26-28 brought bad weather for outdoor events. The weekend of July 3-5 has the potential for severe weather, including thunderstorms and strong winds. Plan accordingly for the weather. Bring umbrellas, change of clothes, towels, extra snacks, etc.
4. Plan for delays, especially if there's bad weather. Many events include something preceding fireworks shows: live music, baseball game, etc. If the event is delayed, the fireworks will be as well. Venues plan these events way ahead of time and have no control over the weather.
5. ENJOY!! This is a once in a lifetime Independence Day / 4th of July! Take photos, make memories, and have fun!

July 3 - Tune in to A Capitol Fourth on PBS or watch the livestream at 8 PM EDT on July 3, 2026. *NOTE - This event is on Friday night, not Saturday night and does NOT include fireworks from Washington, D.C., but will include fireworks from Mount Vernon at the end of the program. Freedom 250 takes place on Saturday, July 4 on the Washington Monument Ground in Washington, D.C. Daytime programs begin at 1 PM. The Freedom 250 fireworks display begins at approximately 10:30 PM. July 4 - Tune in to American Made in Virginia: 250 Years Together on PBS or watch the livestream at 8 PM EDT on July 4, 2026. This special tribute to America is coming from Colonial Williamsburg, Va. and will include fireworks near the end of the program.
There will be additional Independence Day programming on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and Disney on Saturday night, July 4.

Since July 4, 1776, America has been a free country. This is the date the Declaration of Independence was adopted by delegates from the 13 original colonies. Independence Day, also known as the 4th of July, is celebrated each year with parades, fireworks displays, the reading of the Declaration of Independence, family cookouts and other fun activities.
